ITV Racing to show nine hours of coverage of The Breeders’ Cup 2021

Now in its 38th year, The Breeders’ Cup World Championships has grown from its original line up of seven races worth $10 million on one day to 14 races worth $31 million in purses and awards contested over two days. In 2021, it returns to the stunning backdrop of Del Mar, ‘where the turf meets the surf’, in Southern California for the second time. About 150 of the world’s best thoroughbreds will compete in the World Championships with international runners on an almost 20% strike rate, having won a total of 70 of the 360 Breeders’ Cup races to date.

Ed Chamberlin and Francesca Cumani will bring ITV viewers right to the heart of the action presenting nine hours of coverage of The Breeders’ Cup 2021 on ITV Racing, live from Del Mar. They will be joined by triple Breeders’ Cup winning jockey, Johnny Murtagh, with Luke Harvey reporting out and about on the track. The Longines Turf and Longines Classic will be showcased on the main channel and the other races will be on ITV4.

The team will bring UK viewers 13 live races as well as all the behind-the-scenes action including travelling horses from the UK, a Del Mar track guide, insights into US training and track work, and interviews with the key connections.

Ed Chamberlin says:“Going to The Breeders’ Cup has always been on my bucket list and what a treat for everyone at home that the first one on ITV is from the spectacular location of Del Mar. We are really looking forward to bringing 13 races live to a terrestrial audience on ITV for the first time and are in for a few days of the world’s best racing.”

Francesca Cumani says:“While we transition into the 2021/22 National Hunt season and hunker down for the winter in the UK, it’s a huge treat to be able to bring ITV viewers some more flat fireworks from the Breeders’ Cup Championships in California this year. Due to the globalisation of the sport, the flat season never really stops internationally and the Breeders’ Cup brings together the best horses from all over the world to race for big prize money and global acclaim. We really look forward to you enjoying it with us.”
