Samoa skipper Treviranus - 'We can cope without Thompson'

Samoa skipper Ofisa Treviranus insists the Pacific Islanders can cope without experienced lock Kane Thompson when they kick off their World Cup campaign against the United States in Brighton.

The Newcastle Falcons second-rower was sent off in last month's warm-up clash with the Barbarians in London after punching hooker Saia Fainga'a.

Samoa lock Kane Thompson will miss his country's opening World Cup game after landing a two-match ban.

Thompson was sent off for striking Saia Fainga'a during last Saturday's encounter between Samoa and the Barbarians at the Olympic Stadium in London (watch highlights).

Thompson was suspended by independent judicial officer Simon Thomas following a hearing in London on Wednesday, World Rugby announced.

It means Thompson will miss Samoa's final World Cup warm-up fixture against Wasps in Coventry, plus the pool game against the United States in Brighton on September 20.

Flanker Ofisa Treviranus was named Samoa captain for the rugby World Cup in September and his first match as skipper will be next week's one off test against world champions New Zealand.

The 31-year-old forward, who plays his club rugby in England with London Irish, said he had just been focusing on making the starting lineup for the July 8 fixture, the first ever visit to Apia by the All Blacks.

"It's always an honour to represent Samoa, but it is something very special when you are asked to captain your team," Treviranus said in a statement on Monday.
