Steve Hansen has refused to outline defending champions New Zealand's biggest threats to making history by retaining their Rugby World Cup crown.

All Blacks boss Hansen's deadpan response to being asked for New Zealand's top challengers was to name Argentina - the 2011 World Cup winners' opening Pool C opponents.

"Argentina," replied a tongue-in-cheek Hansen when quizzed on the greatest threats to New Zealand's crown.

"They are the next game we play so they are our biggest threat. ... We haven't earned the right to sit here and say who's going to play in the semi-finals, quarter-finals or finals."

All Blacks were 'arrogant' - head coach Steve Hansen

As the reigning champions prepared to depart for England, coach Steve Hansen said he will be going back to basics in order to "earn the right to go forward" in the competition.

The All Blacks will be looking to be the first team to win back-to-back World Cups in this year's tournament which kicks off next week.
