Gok and Poppa Wan take in Hong Kong

Hong Kong - a vibrant city full of contrasts, culture and fabulous cuisine, which also happens to be the birthplace of an absolute legend - the amazing Poppa Wan!

Yes, as much as we love our Gok, there's another man in the Wan family who, frankly, needs to have his own show!

We follow Gok and Poppa Wan as they take in all that Hong Kong has to offer.

Poppa Wan's paper bag chicken

Serves: 4


4/5 cloves of garlic2 thumbnail size pieces of ginger, peeled Handful spring onions3 star anise1 cinnamon stick 1 tsp Chinese five spice1 tablespoon soy sauce1 tablespoon fish sauceChicken – thighs and legs will work best for thisOil for deep frying


  • Chop some garlic, ginger, spring onions and place into a bowl

  • Add the star anise, a cinnamon stick and a sprinkle of five spice

  • Mix with some soy sauce and a dash of fish sauce. Mix it all together.

  • Add the chicken and leave to marinade overnight

  • Place the chicken inside greaseproof paper bags tie the tops and then deep fry until cooked

  • Serve the chicken and be careful – it will be extremely hot
