The ultimate guide to birthstones
It is an ancient custom to associate certain gems, crystals and stones with a month of the year, a practice that dates back centuries.
As well as being helpful when choosing birthday presents, the idea of birthstones is that wearing or holding yours can give you a special energy.
Crystal expert Emma Lucy Knowles is here with everything you need to know about your chosen birthstone.
What are birthstones?
Birthstones are a popular international trend rooted in centuries worth of tradition. The modern day birthstone has several paths of origin - biblical, astrological, cultural and even ancient. In the 8th and 9th Century, you had 12 stones, believed to represent the 12 calendar months and carry one a month as a symbol of protection. Crystals were also used in Egypt to ward off low or negative energy and protect the wearer.
What can your birthstones do for you?
Wearing or carrying your birthstone replicates the energy of stars at the time of your birth. This can boost your vibration and aura - drawing in more of your vibe towards you and projecting it to other people.
Modern and traditional birthstones
There is a modern birthstone list established by the National Association of Jewellers (a standardised list based on custom and practicalities) and a traditional birthstone list that has historically been associated with each month. Often people choose between the two based on the look and feel of the crystal associated with their month.
