Train chaos compensation, new trick to get 2for1 on meals and movies, 20% off Family & Friends railcard and free beauty products in magazines. These are our Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis’ Quick Deals.
Remember, deals can change quickly, even while I’m on the programme. So always double-check the terms and conditions before spending. Plus, while I hope these deals will save you cash, don’t spend if you can’t afford it, don’t need it, or won’t use it.
Great Northern, Thameslink, Northern & Transpennine compensation for disruption
If you’re a season ticket holder with Great Northern, Thameslink, Northern or Transpennine and have experienced major disruption over the past couple of months to your journeys, as well as claiming the usual Delay Repay compensation – where if you arrive at least 30 mins late to your destination (Northern and Transpennine Express) or at least 15 minutes late (Great Northern or Thameslink) regardless of the reason you can get some of your ticket money back - you may be able to also claim up to a month's worth of travel back in additional compensation as well.
This is something you have to claim and each firms process and timetable is different (the links above give you the info) some aren’t claimable just yet but open for claims soon. On average this is worth around £125 for some.
New trick. Get 2for1 at 1,000s of restaurants for a year for £1ish
It’s been three years since those darling TV meerkats (or annoying little pests depending on your view) have run Meerkat movies – a promotion where, if you become a CompareTheMarket.com customer, you get access to 2for1 cinema tickets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for a year. Though it isn’t always the cheapest place to get your insurance or energy, you could use it to your advantage. Get yourself a one-day, UK-only travel insurance policy and even if you choose not to travel, technically you still qualify. The cheapest I’ve found is around £1.10ish – and you join the system within 48 hours. And then you’re able to use the 2for1s.
But the deal’s just got a whole lot stronger. Because now, it’s launched Meerkat Meals. So as well 2for1 on films, you can now get 2for1 on starters, mains and desserts (cheapest free), Sun-Thu anytime, for up to six people at participating restaurants – including Pizza Hut, Prezzo, Frankie & Benny’s, Giraffe, Ask Italian, Zizzi, Handmade Burger Co and Strada, plus over 1,000 independent restaurants. To get the deal, when in the restaurant (you may need to book beforehand) just show your Meerkat Meals membership number (which you’ll find in the app) to the waiter. If you already have Meerkat Movies, you’ll automatically get access to Meals for the remainder of your year. Even better you can use both Meerkat Movies and Meals on the same night.
20% off Family & Friends railcard
Go online to the Family & Friends Railcard website and enter the code SUMMERFUN20before 11.59pm Thursday 26 July, and you’ll be able to get an annual Family & Friends Railcard for £24, which usually costs £30 – ideal for the summer holiday break. The railcard gets you a third off train tickets for up to four adults when travelling together with up to four children aged 5-15 getting 60% off. Even if you don’t use the train that often, just one big rail trip across the country would make the railcard worth it.
