Free £175 bank switch bonus, ‘free’ £9 worth of Nectar points when you spend £12, 10p/litre off fuel, £2.50 cinema ticket and ‘free’ £11 Bobbi Brown mascara with £5 magazine. These are our Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis’ Quick Deals.
Remember, deals can change quickly, even while I’m on the programme. So always double-check the terms and conditions before spending. Plus, while I hope these deals will save you cash, don’t spend if you can’t afford it, don’t need it, or won’t use it.
New. Free £175 for switching banks
The bank switching price war has reignited, this week the biggest upfront cash switching bribe (all legal) of the year has been launched. There are many different accounts so for full info see Martin’s ‘Top bank account’ guide, but here’s a brief rundown of the newbies.
- Switch to HSBC’s Advance Account and its new customers (haven’t had an account with it since 2016) now get £175. You need to use its switching service, have active direct debits and pay in £1,750+/mth, effectively a way of saying pay you salary in if you earn over £26,000 (or both have income going in a joint account). It also offers a linked 5% regular savings account.
- NatWest and RBS also relatively recently launched a £175 switch bonus, but you don’t get that all upfront. This is split between £125 upfront and then another £50 after a year – there’s a fee free version, or if you pay £2/mth its Reward account gives 2% cashback on household bills which for many is worth another £60 - £100 a year even after the fee. The minimum monthly pay in here is £1,500 (equiv to a £21,500/year salary).
And remember switching accounts is easy. Within seven days your old account is closed, any direct debits and standing orders are moved across and any payments going to your old account is auto-forwarded to your new one. Though note, when opening a bank account you will be credit scored.
Sainsbury’s free Nectar points trick, plus petrol discount.
Sainsbury is pushing out the promos at the moment…
This weekend (Friday until Monday) spend at least £1 in store or online at Sainsbury’s or in their petrol stations, swipe your Nectar card and you’ll earn an additional 150 Nectar points (normally it’s 1 point per pound). You can do this up to three times on the four days. So to max the gain, buy three separate £1 items that you were due to buy anyway (each in separate transactions) each day. That’d mean a £12 spend and you get 1,800 Nectar points worth £9 in Sainsbury (or at Vue cinemas, Argos or eBay).
Plus, spend £60 or more on groceries from till Tuesday 28 May in one transaction in-store or online at Sainsbury's and you'll get a voucher for 10p/litre off petrol or diesel to use at its own forecourt – great if you were planning on spending £60 or more there anyway (if you’re spending £120 or more, split your shopping into two, to get two vouchers). And of course do it this weekend and you get the Nectar points too.
£2.50 for a cinema ticket and two packet of chocolates
Buy selected chocolate/sweet packs (includingM&M’s, Maltesers, Minstrels, Galaxy Counter and Starbursts) and you can get a ‘free’ Sunday cinema ticket at participating cinemas, including Cineworld, Empire, and some independents such as Savoy Cinemas and Movie House Cinemas, but not Odeon or Vue. You’ll need to buy two large packs (currently Starbursts are £1.20ish at Tesco) or five small packs to get the ‘free’ ticket – just make sure they have the ‘Sweet Sundays’ promotion on them. Register the codes found on the bags online and you’ll receive a voucher which can be used on any 2D films on any Sunday until 25 August. And you can get two free tickets per person. Just don’t eat all the sweets at once!
Free £11ish Bobbi Brown mascara in £5 mag
Buy the June issue of Harper's Bazaar magazine (£4.80 in store, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley on the front) before Wednesday 5 June, and on the cover you'll get a travel-size 3ml sample of Bobbi Brown smokey eye mascara. The full-size 6ml version costs £22.50 (found reduced at All Beauty), so this 3ml sample is worth around £11.25 – not bad even if you don’t want to read the magazine, but just want the mascara.
