Stillborn babies deserve to be registered and acknowledged
I thought I have to be brave, it was the hardest thing ever. I thought after all these years surely I can stand up and talk about it?
– MP Sharon Hodgson
Last week Labour MP Sharon Hodgson broke down in the House of Commons as she revealed her agony of being told her stillborn daughter Lucy, born at 23.5 weeks 20 years ago - did not ‘officially exist’.
Under UK law, parents are not given a birth or death certificate if the child is born dead before 24 weeks.
Mrs Hodgson said she had stayed away from previous debates surrounding baby loss, as she was ‘too scared’ about feeling overwhelmed with grief, but now she felt it right to speak out about changing the laws.
