On Wednesday, there was a major victory in our four-year campaign against Whirlpool as the company announced they will finally recall 800,000 faulty tumble dryers that could catch fire. The recall starts today and Whirlpool has agreed what we have been working towards, by now offering to come and take away faulty machines and give free replacements. But there is still more work to be done!
WHAT WE KNOW
The company has so far modified 1.7million machines, and last week, Whirlpool admitted that there could still be up to 800,000 unmodified faulty appliances still in use.
WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE?
Alice Beer says, “We have to continue to prove to the Select Committee that the modified machines can’t be trusted either and we only have until July 22 to prove it. So if you have a modified machine that has ever caught fire, been smoky or had a burning smell and Whirlpool made you sign an NDA or gagging order, now is the time to come forward. You can break the NDA and you will not be pursued. If you have an unmodified or modified machine, you need to do something today.”
IS YOUR DRYER AFFECTED?
There are 627 tumble dryer models affected, with the affected brands including Hotpoint, Indesit, Creda, Swan and Proline.
According to current advice, owners of unmodified, affected tumble dryers should unplug them and contact Whirlpool.
"We know over the past four years that many, many people - we don’t know exactly how many people, because we’ve asked Whirlpool and they won’t tell us - have paid £50-99 for a replacement machine.
So they have every right to feel irked about that, but the most important thing is safety." - Alice Beer
HOW DO I GET IN TOUCH IF I'VE BEEN AFFECTED?
Customers with unmodified dryers can contact Whirlpool on 0800 151 0905 or visit their websites.
If you have experienced a fire with your modified machine and/or have been required to sign an NDA, you can get in touch with the Select Committee by emailing email@example.com or calling 020 7219 0728.
After you get in touch, do let us know by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org so we can keep in touch with you and ensure we can see this campaign through.
