When Julie Smith was diagnosed with severe depression 12 years ago, her husband Gordon struggled to know what might help his wife. That was until a trip to a local poultry show gave him a clucking mad idea! Purchasing six chickens, Gordon presented Julie with her new charges and suddenly Julie had a purpose again.
Bringing with them routine, responsibility and a whole lot of chicken-love, Julie’s girls have helped her regain a love for life and her depression has all but disappeared. She even turned caring for chickens into a business called Fowlty Towers.
Visiting us during Mental Health Awareness Week, Julie wants to tell the world about chicken therapy and she's brought eight fowl friends with her - Nora, Gloria, Flora, Chewpecker, Bantam Manace, Hen Solo, Jabba The Cluck and - not forgetting ladies man, cockerel Luke Sky Squawker!
