The discussion is about whether you use tongues and we decided…. there were no tongues involved at this stage!
– Denise Van Outen on her EastEnders debut
The original Essex girl is heading to the East End! After a reported 15 years of approaches and offers, Denise Van Outen has finally succumbed to the EastEnders bug, and makes her debut appearance in tonight's episode.
Chatting to Phillip and Christine, Denise explained how this year was the perfect time to join the cast. “Over the years [I’ve had conversations] dating back to the 90s when new characters have gone in, and it just hasn’t been the right time… So it was kind of put on hold, and then this opportunity came along and I just thought she’s a really fun character. And if you’re going to go into a soap, you want to go in and cause a little bit of trouble! Get tongues wagging… and she does!”
On her character Karin Smart, Denise admitted, “She’s got history with Phil Mitchell and looking for him to start with and meets Max… She’s a strong woman, knows exactly what she wants.”
Revealing that she had to kiss Max - actor Jake Wood - in her first scene, Denise said, “I looked at the script and said ‘what an ice breaker’!"
"And actors have a discussion about what you can or can’t do - the rules! Because some people like to really go for it. We were just acting but with passion. The discussion is about whether you use tongues and we decided…. there were no tongues involved at this stage!”
Talking about her real love life, Denise confessed, “Eddie is from the East End… and I practise with him! It was quite funny - and he slipped the tongue! But he’s allowed though".
