Series 1

Episode 1

Cambridge undergraduates Kim Philby and Donald Maclean are recruited by Anthony Blunt and Guy Burgess to work for Moscow.

Episode 2

The four spies must bury their left-wing pasts and become part of the Establishment. Philby manages to penetrate MI5 and is sent to Spain to become a right-wing journalist. While there he is ordered by Moscow to assassinate Franco.

Episode 3

It's wartime and the Germans are closing in on Paris. Donald Maclean falls in love with an American, Melinda, and hurriedly marries her so that she can escape with him and the British embassy staff.

Episode 4

Maclean is able to pass nuclear secrets on to Moscow, and as a result the Soviets are able to detonate their first atomic bomb. The CIA narrows down their suspects and Maclean is on the list. Philby realises that if one falls they all fall.
