Nick has moved north from London full of hopes and expectations. But both he and Kate face hostility and bigotry from the locals.

2. Fruits of the Earth

Nick pursues a moorland flasher and drunken hikers, while Kate encounters abuse when she helps a woman with a bullying husband. But it's a bullying cleaner who makes the coppers fume.

3. Rumours

Nick gets an anonymous tip-off about a pop star's undesirable predilections. Greengrass is in trouble because of village gossip.

4. Playing with Fire

Nick is sent on a mission to solve two mysterious barn fires. He discovers that both incidents are linked by the sound of a motorcycle.

A prank involving three young boys is mistakenly involved with a longstanding feud between two neighbours. Nick is on hand but ends up putting himself in unexpectedly grave danger.
