1. Crossing the River

It's 1942: the Japanese have conquered Burma and are threatening India. At Mayapore, Hari Kumar comes under suspicion of subversion by the District Superintendent of Police.

2. The Bibighar Gardens

Daphne and Hari draw closer together. During a night of rioting and protest, and after an assignation with him in the Bibighar Gardens, she returns home with a claim to make.

3. Questions of Loyalty

There is a fatality when Daphne gives birth. Meanwhile, about to be posted to the front, Teddie Bingham brings forward his marriage.

4. Incidents at a Wedding

The arrangements for Susan and Teddie's wedding are under threat, but there's a solution. As the Layton family gather, what should be a happy occasion is overshadowed.

5. The Regimental Silver

Merrick apologises to Sarah Manners about his presence at the wedding and explains connections about Daphne's attack. The events of that night also trouble Lady Manners.

6. Ordeal by Fire

Sarah tells Susan about the death of her husband, and they learn of great bravery from an unexpected quarter. Sarah embarks on a journey to bring comfort to a wounded man.

7. Daughters of the Regiment

While visiting the wounded Ronald Merrick in Calcutta, Sarah meets Jimmy Clark, who challenges her. In Pankot, another daughter of the regiment confesses her own act of rebellion.

8. The Day of the Scorpion

Sarah returns from Calcutta to find that Barbie is moving out and Susan is tense, later putting her baby in compromising position. Captain Merrick returns to Pankot.

9. The Towers of Silence

Susan's baby has been rescued from the ring of fire that nearly engulfed him. Barbie embarks on a generous mission but is turned back by an appalling discovery.

10. An Evening at the Maharanee's

In Bombay, 1945, Guy Perron is working in Intelligence with Merrick, and is drawn into a web of intrigue. He meets Sarah, who has come to Bombay to welcome her father home.

11. The Travelling Companions

Sarah learns to her great distress that Merrick is about to announce his engagement to Susan. She turns for help to an old friend who knows more about Merrick's past than anyone.

12. The Moghul Room

Merrick blackmails someone to gain access to Susan's records, and is recalled to Delhi at the end of the war. Guy and Sarah find that their friendship with Hari brings them closer.
