September 1942. While onboard the RMS Laconia, Junior Third Officer Thomas Mortimer befriends the enigmatic Hilda Smith. Beneath the sea, a German U-boat captained by Werner Hartenstein looks for targets.

2. Part 2

On board the crowded submarine, a tentative truce forms between the sailors and the survivors. Hartenstein's distress call has surprising consequences both for the rescue operation and the future conduct of the war.
