A few weeks into the term, homesickness is taking its toll. However, Mildred makes a lot of new friends, and suggests they all have a midnight feast. This cheers everyone up and lays to rest the hungry ghost of Cackle's Academy.
Mildred's cat in a basket turns out to be a pig in a poke. Ethel behaves exactly like a real pig. Charlie Blossom gets mixed up in all this and manages to save the day, though not before the pig becomes a duck and Charlie becomes a donkey!
Mildred fails at her potion test and brings shame on the school at the Halloween celebrations. She is in deep disgrace, until she redeems herself by saving the girls and the staff from being turned into frogs by a band of evil witches.

After the potion laboratory is wrecked by a potion lesson, Miss Cackle seizes the opportunity for a complete modernisation of the school.
Mrs Cosie's tea-room is a haven of peace and comfort for Miss Cackle - full of delicious goodies. It is, however, stricty out-of-bounds to the girls of the Academy.
The Chief Wizard, Egbert Hellibore, gives a talk to the school on Spells, Potions and Gourmet Cooking. He suggests a debate between the boys at his school for Wizards and, put on the spot, Miss Cackle has to agree.
