Local Elections 2014: Peterborough
Conservative majority: 7
Peterborough is one of those election battleground areas which political parties need to win if they are to form governments. In these local elections, the Conservatives are defending a relatively small overall majority of just seven on Peterborough City Council.
Over the years the council is hung more often that not with no one party having enough seats to out-vote all the others. However the Conservatives have had a controlling majority since 2002.
After three years in power in the 1970s, Labour have had a majority for only a single year in 1996-97.
21 of the 57 council seats are up for election.
