Councillors in a seaside resort have declared their town 'under threat' amid plans for an eighth fish and chip shop.

Plans to open another fish and chip shop on Sheringham High Street, would bring the total to eight operating near each other, which is too many according to members of Sheringham Town Council.

In the area surrounding the High Street, there are five fish and chip shops within 500m of each other – as well as numerous ice cream shops and fast-food joints.

Members have said the resort is “under threat” by the proliferation of fast food, while locals have written to the council to complain.

The backlash to the fish and chip shop comes just four months after Domino’s, one of the nation’s biggest pizza chains, was also pushed out of town.

In a statement to North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), the town council said: “The firmly held view is that Sheringham’s conservation area is under threat by this planning application and others like it.

The council urged NNDC "to use its powers to reject this application and ensure that only an application that protects the wellbeing of its residents and visitors and respects the unique features of our conservation area will ever be approved.”
