Moment police arrest suspect Roy Barclay over murder of dog walker Anita Rose seen for first time

  • Watch the moment Roy Barclay is arrested on suspicion of Anita Rose's murder

The moment police arrested a suspect for the murder of a woman on her morning dog walk can be shown to the public for the first time.

Officers apprehended Roy Barclay, 56, in Ipswich Library in October, nearly three months after Anita Rose was found unconscious in Brantham, Suffolk.

The 57-year-old mother-of-six was discovered lying on a countryside track with severe head injuries on 24 July.

She was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital but died four days later.

Bodycam footage released to ITV News by the Crown Prosecution Service shows the moment police arrested Barclay in the public library.

Barclay appeared to remain emotionless as police read him his rights in hushed tones.

Barclay, of no fixed address, denies murder and is standing trial for murder at Ipswich Crown Court.

Prosecutors have told the court Barclay had been “on the run trying to avoid the police… and avoid being recalled back to prison”.

They say he had been living “off-grid” at the time of the attack and was sleeping in “various makeshift camps”.

The prosecution said a pink jacket worn by Ms Rose on the day she was attacked was found at one of Barclay’s makeshift camps.

Barclay had looked at news articles about the incident in the days after the attack, jurors were told earlier in the trial.

Describing the days that led up to Barclay's arrest, the prosecution said it took a “piece of luck for police to have contact with” Barclay, when Det Con Barry Simpson “saw a male walking quickly along the road” on 15 October.

The officer, who was in an unmarked car and working on the murder investigation, “thought the male looked similar to an image he had seen in the murder inquiry” and stopped to speak to him.

The prosecution said the man was Barclay, but that he “lied” to the officer and gave his name as John Lesley, providing a false home address and saying he worked as a gardener.

The jury heard how the officer took photos of Barclay “surreptitiously” and he was allowed on his way, but a “manhunt” started the following day when officers determined that the man was not John Lesley.

Barclay was tracked down by police and arrested at Ipswich Library on 21 October.

The court heard how Barclay had “changed his appearance”, with a shaved head and no beard.

The trial continues.
