A teenage boy has been arrested following a major fire which destroyed a former school.

Firefighters spent Tuesday night tackling the blaze at the former Parkway Middle School building on Park Road in Haverhill, Suffolk.

A huge plume of black smoke could be seen for miles after the fire broke out, with around 70 firefighters from Suffolk and Cambridgeshire at the scene at its height.

Suffolk Police confirmed the fire was being investigated as a suspected arson.

The force said a 15-year-old boy was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of criminal damage - arson not endangering life.

After being taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning, he was bailed until 22 June.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service confirmed no one was injured, but the derelict building collapsed.
