Poll date of 13 August confirmed for Clacton by-election after Farage MP resignation
The by-election triggered by Nigel Farage’s decision to quit as an MP and fight to reclaim his seat will be held on 13 August.
The Clacton contest is being boycotted by the other main Westminster parties, who view Mr Farage’s actions as a stunt, leaving comedy candidate Count Binface as the highest-profile opponent for the Reform UK leader.
Reform had originally hoped the vote would be held on 6 August but Tendring District Council announced it will be held a week later.
Potential candidates can submit their nominations from 14 to 17 July and residents of the Essex constituency not already on the electoral register have until 28 July to apply for a vote.
Among other candidates to state their intention to stand are former actor-turned-political activist Laurence Fox for Reclaim, and Piers Corbyn, brother of former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.
Acting returning officer Ian Davidson said: “The electoral timetable is set out by law and so we are bound by these dates.
“If residents want to have their democratic say then they must be registered, so anyone who wants to vote in the upcoming by-election should make sure they can by registering in time.
“You can register to vote online, or you can contact our team who will be happy to help you.
“I would also encourage people to check now that they have valid ID to enable them to vote at a polling station; and if they do not, then to apply for the free alternative voter authority certificate.
“We want to make sure that everyone is still able to cast their vote next month.”
Mr Farage had a majority of 8,405 and a 46.2% share of the vote in 2024.
He resigned as an MP after questions mounted about a £5m gift he received from crypto-billionaire and Reform donor Christopher Harborne and support from convicted fraudster George Cottrell before entering Parliament.
He sought to bill the vote as a “people versus the establishment” contest.
Hitting out at other Westminster parties, Mr Farage told TalkTV: “They have acted in concert with each other as the uniparty. They’re trying to turn it into a joke.”
An investigation by Parliamentary Standards Commissioner Daniel Greenberg over whether Mr Farage’s failure to declare the £5m gift on becoming an MP in 2024 breached Commons rules has been suspended due to his resignation.
But it will resume if he wins the by-election and returns to the Commons.
If he is found to have broken the rules and a suspension of more than 10 days is imposed, it could trigger a recall petition and the prospect of Mr Farage losing his seat, forcing a second by-election.
