A senior detective has described the man suspected of killing Wakefield schoolgirl Elsie Frost as a "homicidal maniac".
Detective Chief Superintendent Nick Wallen has told a fresh inquest in Wakefield he was "desperately sad " that Peter Pickering did not stand trial .
Pickering , known at the Beast of Wombwell , died in custody last year as detectives were gathering evidence against him.
Fourteen year old Elsie was stabbed to death in October 1965.
Her brother and sister had campaigned for years for the full facts surrounding her death to be re-investigated.
Today a coroner at the inquest into her death ruled that the schoolgirl was unlawfully killed. Chris Kiddey reports.
