Appeal to trace dog after crash on M1 in South Yorkshire

A dog fled the scene of a motorway crash which killed a fellow family pet, police have said.
The German shepherd, called Athena, was one of three dogs in a car that was hit by another vehicle near junction 33 of the M1 in South Yorkshire at about 6.45pm on Saturday, 15 March.
A springer spaniel died at the scene. A Staffordshire bull terrier remained in the car, but Athena ran off.
A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "Officers carried out searches of the area, and enquiries with partners but we, and the owners, have still sadly been unable to find the dog.
"We’re urging our communities to be vigilant and if you see a German shepherd that you believe could be Athena, please get in touch."
The driver of the other car, a 40-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of failing to provide a specimen for analysis and careless driving and was due to appear at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
