The M1 in South Yorkshire has reopened following an early hours crash.

National Highways said the motorway was shut both ways shortly after midnight after "a serious collision involving a car which left the carriageway" between junction 36 for Tankersley and 37 for Barnsley.

A spokesperson initially said the road would remain closed "throughout the day" for investigations, recovery and clear-up.

But both carriageways were reopened by lunchtime on Thursday.
