A man and woman detained in Hull have been re-arrested on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts.

The 23-year-olds were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder on Thursday following an investigation by counter-terrorism police.

A house in the city was also searched in connection.

Counter Terrorism Policing North East (CTPNE), which has been leading the investigation, said on Friday it had re-arrested the two and had been granted permission to hold them for up to seven days.

Police can hold suspects for up to 14 days under the Terrorism Act in England and Wales.

The CTPNE did not reveal any further details surrounding the suspected terrorism preparations, only that they had initially been questioned on suspicion of conspiracy to murder.

The man, described as white British, was also originally arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon.

The woman's ethnicity meanwhile was listed as white Polish.

A spokesperson for the unit said: "They have both been rearrested on suspicion of the preparation of terrorist acts, contrary to Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006.

"Both currently remain in custody. A Warrant of Further Detention was granted today (Friday, February 27) for seven days, giving officers until Thursday, March 5, to hold the suspects."

Searches at the house in Hull remained ongoing on Friday.

The force said the arrests had been pre-planned and based on intelligence, adding there was not believed to be any immediate risk to the community.
