A driver who left a passenger fatally injured when he fled the scene of a crash has been jailed.

Hamza Hussain, 23, was driving around Bramall Lane roundabout in Sheffield when he lost control and crashed on 17 June 2024.

His passenger, Mohammed Waheed, suffered serious injuries and died in hospital two days later.

A 15-year-old boy who was also in the car was seriously injured.

Following the incident Hussain fled the scene and made two phone calls - one to a relative and one to the car's owner.

Footage showed he had been driving at speeds of over 60mph in 30mph zones and was travelling at 49mph when he crashed.

Hussain later handed himself in to police.

He admitted causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving, and driving without insurance when he appeared at Sheffield Crown Court in January.

He has now been jailed for five years and four months and banned rom driving for seven years and eight months.

Judge Graham Steed KC told him he was "young, immature and an inexperienced driver behind the wheel of a powerful car".

“Whether you were showing off or incapable, your standards were below that of a responsible driver," he added.

“No amount of sentence will put a value on Mohammed Waheed’s life, but it needs to put punishment on you for his death.”

Sgt John Taylo, of South Yorkshire Police, said: “While this will never undo the death and destruction caused by his actions, justice for Mohammed and his family has been achieved.

“I also hope that today’s sentencing sends a strong warning to those who have a lack of regard for the law."
