The General Election highs and lows in the Midlands

There has been a very eventful night across the Midlands, with a number of momentous moments including the first female Sikh MP elected to parliament.

Preet Gill held Birmingham Edgbaston for Labour with 53.3% of the vote. The 44-year-old said it is 'incredible' and an 'honour' to become the first in the UK.

Labour's Eleanor Smith has been elected for Wolverhampton South West, making her the first black female MP for the West Midlands.

In Peterborough, Fiona Onasanya won for Labour beating Conservative Stewart Jackson after a recount. She received 48.1% compared to Mr Jackson's 46.8%.

Veteran David Winnick failed to defend Walsall North where his majority was less than 2,000. He had held his seat there since 1979. Conservative's Eddie Hughes is now the new MP.

Labour's one gain in the region came in Warwick and Leamington where they took the seat from the Conservatives with a massive swing of more than 15%.

There was also an historic win for the Conservatives in Stoke-on-Trent South which now has a Tory MP for the first time in its history. Jack Brereton is thought to be one of the youngest MPs.
