Birmingham City Councillor Barry Bowles (Lab) has written to leader John Clancy urging him to resign over his handling of the bin dispute.

Cllr Clancy, who is also leader of the Council’s Labour group, has denied making an agreement at Acas with the refuse workers’ union Unite which paused the strike for two weeks.

On Friday Cllr Clancy said publicly “there was no deal” and the strike resumed.

Cllr Barry Bowles has written a personal letter to John Clancy ahead of a meeting of the Council’s Labour group tonight, during which he is expected to come under fire.

Two other Labour councillors have already tabled a formal motion for Cllr Clancy to resign, but under committee rules it can’t be heard until next week.

In his letter, given to ITV News, Cllr Bowles who represents the Hall Green ward says:

Cllr Bowles told ITV News that he supports the Council decision taken in June to modernise the city’s Waste Management service, which includes 106 redundancies.
