The Channel Islands' only zoo will close tomorrow (24 March), due to the latest social distancing advice.

Durrell will be closed 'until further notice', but says its team will continue to provide the animals with the very best care.

This has been an incredibly difficult decision for us and we are truly devastated by this news, but, as always the safety of our visitors, animals and staff are our top priority, so closing our gates is the only option to reduce the spread of Covid-19.

– Dr Lesley Dickie, Durrell CEO

In her statement, the zoo's CEO added that it needs support from the public 'now more than ever'.

We understand these are uncertain times for everyone and we are so grateful for your continued support as a Durrell member. Your valuable contribution for your membership provides our global charity with the vital income needed to look after over 1,000 animals here at Jersey Zoo and to continue our vital conservation work protecting the planet's most precious ecosystems and wildlife.

The annual Durrell Challenge fundraiser, due to take place on 17 May, has now been postponed until September.
