Dogs and horses could be allowed on Alderney's Longis Beach this summer if politicians agree to a trial.

The States will consider changing the law to let them visit all year round, with some restrictions, under a pilot scheme until the end of 2027.

Currently, the animals are blocked from accessing it between 1 June and 15 September.

A survey completed by 640 people found that the majority do not support an all-out ban.

Instead, most would like dogs and horses to be let on the beach outside of peak hours from 5pm to 8am.

Longis Beach is seen as the preferred space for the trial, with survey respondents also highlighting that owners should use leads where needed, keep animals under control and maintain a clean and safe environment.

Key concerns included dog and horse mess not being picked up and the safety of children.

In a statement, the States of Alderney said: "The proposed trial would allow the States to assess how a managed change could operate in practice, while balancing the needs of different beach users and protecting the island's environment."

More details will follow the States Meeting on Friday 29 May.
