Man's body found in the River Irwell in Manchester City Centre
Police say a body has been found in the River Irwell after reports that a man had fallen in.
Emergency services were called to an area of the river close to the Lowry Hotel in Manchester city centre.
Underwater search teams recovered a man's body from the river four hours later.
Superintendent Ian Crewe, of Greater Manchester Police, said: “I’m sorry to confirm that a short while ago, underwater search teams recovered the body of a male in the River Irwell.
“We will now be working to identify this person’s next of kin so that we can provide them with support from specially trained officers as we continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding what happened.”
