A woman has died and a man has been left in a critical condition after getting into difficulty in the sea.

Emergency services were called to Fleetwood Beach in Thornton Cleveleys just after 8pm on Saturday 30 May, after receiving reports that two people had got into difficulty in the water.

It is understood the two people had gone into the water in an attempt to rescue their dog, who had become stuck.

HM Coastguard recovered a woman in her 60s and a man, also in his 60s, from the water to be treated by paramedics.

The woman was pronounced dead at the hospital, while the man remains in a critical condition.

Lancashire Police say enquiries to identify her next of kin are ongoing. They added that the dog is safe and well.
