England fell at the final hurdle of the Quad Series with a nail-biting defeat to Australia who took a one-goal win in the last seconds.

It was always going to be a tall order for third-ranked England to topple the World number ones, but the Roses game out strong and fought for every goal.

The Aussie Diamonds beat South Africa 62-46 and arch rivals New Zealand 57-50 in the earlier games of the Quad Series - so a final win over England sealed their overall victory.

A 7,000-strong crowd at Wembley Arena witnessed a tenacious performance from both sides - as England fought to redeem themselves from a heavy loss against New Zealand last week in Liverpool.

Relentless defense from Goal Keeper Geva Mentor kept England in the game and there were never more than a handful of goals between the teams.

Australia's lightning-quick transitions enabled them to capitalise on basic errors from Tracey Neville's side - but impressive work-rate from the Roses led them to edge ahead and go in to half-time three goals clear.

Australia responded with speed and aggression and leveled the score before pulling away to take a lead of six. But England fired back and agile work from Chelsea Pitman and Beth Cobden in centre court kept them in the game.

It came down to the final seconds - England were down by one and in possession, but Goal Keeper and Captain of the Australian team, Sharnie Layton asserted her dominance and took a clean interception to ensure an Aussie victory.

Former England captain Geva Mentor was named Player of the Match. The game was the first international netball game to be shown live on BBC Two.
