Peacehaven faith leader praises community as gathering takes place after mosque arson
Saqib Miah told ITV News Meridian that they "have done magnificent things with the youth here" and the support given back has been "overwhelming".
The trustee of a mosque said he is "touched" by the solidarity from the local community after an arson attack took place last week.
Four men, aged between 22 and 46, have been arrested and released on bail, on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life, after a fire caused significant damage to the mosque and a nearby vehicle in Peacehaven, Sussex.
"It's all overwhelming at the moment," said Saqib Miah. "People are very much in favour of seeing the good things we've done and showing their support, it has been really touching."
It comes as a gathering, aiming to support and unite people, took place on Friday 1O October almost a week after the incident. Many cards and flowers have been left for those affected.
Worshippers were forced to cancel daily prayers earlier this week because of the police investigation, but they have now resumed.
A fundraising page has seen almost £40,000 worth of donations to help repair the mosque and strengthen its security.
Chris Ward, MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, also attended the gathering and said it's been a "difficult week for Peacehaven".
The Labour MP was touched by the number of people who were there. "There are scenes of hope and solidarity," said Ward. "This is an outpouring of affection and strength to rebuild the community."
The local mayor, Cllr Deborah Donovan, said the gathering is all about "coming together".
