Local Elections: The results
Its been a long night of resounding victories for Labour in the local elections. Here's a round-up of the result so far...
SUNDERLAND
The first result came from Sunderland. The Tories lost six of their seats, and the Lib Dems lost their only seat.
Labour gained eight seats.
UKIP outpolled the Sunderland Redhill ward from the Conservatives by 388 to 125.
Labour now hold 64 seats; Conservatives 8; Others 3; Lib Dems 0.
SOUTH TYNESIDE
On South Tyneside, Labour gained nine seats to maintain council control.
The Tories held onto one seat, as did UKIP. But the Liberal Democrats lost their only seat. All other parties lost eight seats in total.
The result means Labour hold 48 of the 54 council seats; Others 4; Conservative 1; UKIP 1; Lib Dem 0.
HARTLEPOOL
It was a good night at the polls for Labour in Hartlepool as the party held onto a 61 percent majority of seats.
All parties suffered losses as boundary changes meant there were fewer positions available.
But Labour faired best, despite losing eight seats to claim 21 of the 33.
Conservatives lost one seat, taking their total to three. But it was a bad night for the Liberal Democrats, who lost both their seats.
All other parties lost three seats, leaving them with nine overall.
GATESHEAD
Labour gained five seats to hold a majority of 18 seats in Gateshead.
Lib Dem lost one seat, taking their total to 11. Liberal lost their only seat.
HARROGATE
The Conservatives held onto Harrogate after recording a majority of 33 seats.
The Tories lost one seat to an Independent but still hold council control.
There was no change for Lib Dem, who still have 17 seats. Liberal also hold onto their only seat.
Independent parties gained one seat, taking their total to three.
NORTH TYNESIDE
It was a bad night for the Conservatives and Lib Dems on North Tyneside.
The Conservatives lost six seats and the Lib Dems three, as Labour gained eight.
The result leaves Labour with 43 seats; Conservative 13; Lib Dem 3; Independents 1.
