Veteran weightlifters battle it out

Weightlifters from around the world are taking part in a Masters Championship near Newcastle. Competitors from 25 countries are battling it out at the Holiday Inn at Seaton Burn.

Organisers say the Bench Press championships are testimony to the benefits of exercise and healthy living - regardless of age. The weightlifters taking part - men and women - range from their forties to their seventies. The competition is also aimed at fostering international relations and a greater understanding of international cultures.

The competition runs until Saturday 19th April.
