North Yorkshire's Runswick Bay takes top spot in The Times' 50 best beaches for 2020

North Yorkshire's Runswick Bay beach has been awarded the title of Britain's Best Beach.

The beach took the top spot in The Times' 'Britain's 50 best beaches for 2020'.

Runswick Bay is nestled between Staithes and Whitby. It was described as 'close to perfection' by travel writer Chris Haslam, who compiles the annual list.

Redcar and Cleveland's Marske-by-the-Sea also featured in the list.

James Mason, Welcome to Yorkshire chief executive, said the beach was "truly beautiful."

He said: "I had the pleasure of filming with The Times and The Sunday Times at Runswick Bay this week and what a truly beautiful place it is. The views are spectacular and the beach is absolutely amazing."

Janet Deacon, tourism and corporate marketing manager at Scarborough Council, said: "We're thrilled that Runswick Sands has taken the coveted title of Britain's Best Beach by The Times. Runswick Bay is an unspoilt beauty spot that can give any beach resort in the world a run for its money.

"Whatever the season, it's spectacular."
