Police have confirmed to UTV that they are investigating a number of alleged fraud offences relating to the issuing of driving licences.

It comes after claims were made people have been able to buy driving licences without taking tests.

The PSNI said it is working with DVA officials adding that it would be inappropriate to comment further as the investigation is ongoing.

The matter was raised today at Stormont.

DUP MLA Deborah Erskine told the Assembly: “Some drivers had been able to gain a licence through payment, having not sat a driving test, and that, as a result, a police investigation has been launched.

"Let us think about the realities.

"Effectively, that means that, right now in Northern Ireland, there are, potentially, people who are driving with a licence without having sat their test.

"The implications for road safety are huge”

A Department for Infrastructure spokesperson said: "As this matter is subject to a PSNI investigation we cannot comment at this time."
