Michael Philpott and his wife Mairead were remanded in custody when they appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court today charged with murdering six of their children, who died after a fire at their home in Allenton in Derby on May 11.
Jade, 10, and brothers John, nine, Jack, seven, Jessie, six, and Jayden, five, all died in the fire, and a sixth sibling Duwayne, 13, died of his injuries in Birmingham Children's Hospital two days later.
During the brief hearing, a woman in the public gallery had to be escorted from the court by police and court officials for shouting abuse at the couple.
As he was led away, Mick Philpott blew a kiss to friends and family.
Mick and Mairead Philpott are due to appear at Nottingham Crown Court at 10am tomorrow.
