The mayor of London Boris Johnson has said there is no new intelligence about a possible terrorist attack in London, but that a 'Paris-style' attack could not be ruled out.

In an interview with ITV News he said there would be an increase in the number of armed officers on streets across London and on big landmarks - ahead of a fresh round of funding cuts to be announced by the Metropolitan police next week.

Mr Johnson said he was making the argument to the Prime Minister and to the Chancellor of the importance of a strong, counter-terrorism force to keep London safe.

He said increasing the number of armed officers was "only prudent" in light of the attacks.

The mayor said solidarity many Londoners were feeling for Parisians was due to the battle of cultures being postured by the nature of the attacks and the messages of ISIS. Paris, he said, epitomized a way of life - a culture of hard work and "gentle, moderate hedonism in the evening, that they dislike and despise."

He played down the risk posed by young radical Londoners - saying the number of those classified as a security risk remains "in the low thousands", stressing the responsibilities of the families and communities of those who may be vulnerable to extremism to act with police to protect themselves and the public.
