Burgham Horse Trials

The Burgham Horse Trials continue today after British Eventing officials granted organisers permission to extend the event for a third day.

Friday's competitions were cancelled after bad weather, and officials deemed the course near Felton, Northumberland as too wet. But the show continued as normal over the weekend, and the course passed an official inspection on Sunday.

The outcome means organisers were able to reschedule Friday's activities for Monday.

Around 120 riders are expected to compete in Intermediate and Open Intermediate classes. Well known competitors including Ruth Edge, Matthew Wright and Jamie Atkinson are all taking part.

The Burgham Horse Trials has started after yesterday's events were hit by bad weather.

Almost five thousand people are expected to attend the Northumberland site today to see nearly 300 competitors in action.

Friday's competitions were cancelled after recent heavy rain, and tickets prices were halved as a result. Organisers are hoping the day can be re-scheduled for Monday, but say all other events are running as normal.

Chris Jennings, an event spokesman, said: "As far as the eventing is concerned, everything is going ahead as normal. So it's business as usual.

"We halved the entry price as a nice gesture, but also to help the traders as many previous equestrian events have been cancelled altogether.

"It's a credit to everybody involved that we got this event on."
