Police investigate thefts of eight defibrillators in Bristol and South Gloucestershire

Police are investigating the thefts of eight defibrillator units in Bristol and South Gloucestershire.

One outside Frenchay Village Hall was stolen over Christmas. Others have gone missing from locations including Fishponds, Pucklechurch and Easton.

Defibrillators are used to deliver a shock to someone's heart after they suffer a cardiac arrest.

New helipad at BRI becomes operational

The new helipad at the Bristol Royal Infirmary goes into operation today, to coincide with the children's move from Frenchay.

Tests have been carried out on the facility, which means patients can be flown onto the roof of the hospital, closer to help than they have ever been before.

The Great Western Air Ambulance, which covers the region, is too heavy to use the landing pad and a fundraising campaign is underway to replace it.

Homes evacuated after van fire near Bristol

Three homes have been evacuated in Frenchay after a fire involving a van, which was carrying an acetylene cylinder. Fire crews were called to Frenchay Park Road this morning and have put out the fire but are cooling the gas cylinder and using thermal imagery to check for hot spots.

An area of 100m around the van was cordoned off and the houses evacuated in case the cylinder exploded. Six people had to leave their homes. Begbrook Lane has also been closed. The cordon will remain until firefighters are satisfied that there is no longer any risk.

Man in hospital after Gotherington accident

The motorcyclist, a man from Evesham, has been taken to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol with life threatening injuries.

A 20-year-old man from Apperley has been arrested on suspicion of driving without due care and attention. He is currently helping police with their inquiries.

The A435 at Gotherington remains closed following the incident.

The collision happened at around 8am and involved a red Yamaha motorcycle and a silver Peugeot 306.


Plans to double the number of homes in Frenchay discussed tonight

Plans to almost double the number of homes in a Parish near Bristol will be discussed by residents this evening. North Bristol NHS Trust is downsizing Frenchay Hospital and moving some services to a new 'super hospital' in Southmead in 2014.

There are outline plans to replace hospital buildings with 550 homes.

A public meeting tonight will discuss how it will affect the village.

Frenchay Hospital named as specialist epilepsy centre

Frenchay Hospital near Bristol is to become a specialist centre for treating children with epilepsy.

It will be one of four in the country and help a quarter of all children in the UK with the condition. The hospital will carry out surgery on young patients whose epilepsy is resistant to drugs and also research the illness.
