Pickleball proves a hit with young players

People in Lockerbie are making the most of the new sport to make its way to the town.

Pickleball was brought over from America by Pat Burnett who saw a game being played when she was on holiday in California.

It's a mix between tennis, badminton and ping-pong, with one of it's main draws being that it can be played indoors.

These young players told ITV Border why they've taken it up:

Why Pickleball?

Pickleball, the newest sport to come to Lockerbie, is a mix between tennis, badminton and ping-pong.

It's thought the game was given its unusual name because the family who invented it had a dog called pickles, who loved chasing the ball around the court.

One of the main attractions of Pickleball is that it can be played indoors, so it is ideal for the UK's unpredictable climate.

Raymond Barrie has played tennis for more than 50 years but is enjoying a new challenge. He says he would like to see more people getting involved:

"We're lucky to have the two badminton courts here but any other club that had badminton courts or even one badminton court could get started because we could lend them the paddles and the whiffleballs as they're called, to play the game and hopefully it would take off and there would be more people and we'd maybe even get a match against somebody."

The club meets every Wednesday night at the town hall in Lockerbie and at the moment between 30 and 40 people are attending each week. It costs £2 per session and paddles and balls are provided.

What is Pickleball?

A new sport called 'Pickleball' has made it's way to Lockerbie.

The sport is hugely popular in America and when Pat Burnett was there on holiday she watched the game being played and thought it would be great to bring it back home.

"It's played with bats and balls and is similar to tennis but a bit easier, it's a cross between tennis, badminton and table tennis that's how its described. It's a little bit of an easier and slower game than tennis and it's more suitable for people of all abilities and age groups. We have lots of families coming along with children, parents and grandparents all joining in."
