Police were alerted to the man - believed to be in his 50s - standing on the elevated island shortly before 9pm when a passing motorist became concerned about his wellbeing.

Officers from the Central Motorway Police Group were immediately dispatched along with Walsall Police. The roads were closed only to reopen around 40 minutes later when police were able to bring the man to safety. He was then taken to hospital.
