President Bashar al-Assad's father-in-law has compared the Syrian uprising to last summer's London riots, in an interview with the Daily Telegraph.

Speaking at his home in London, Fawaz Akhras said his daughter Asma, married to President Assad, was "strong" and he spoke to her "often".

Dr Akhras said: "When the London riots burst out and Mr Cameron said he would get the army out, now would you compare that to Homs? What would you do? Just watch them killing you? You have a responsibility to ensure the security of your people.”
