School bus stuck in flood water had driven through road closure sign

Twenty-six pupils were rescued by fire crews after a school bus became stuck in flood water between Newton-on-Ouse and Tollerton. The council says the driver had taken the bus through a road closure sign.

Bus company to carry out investigation after school bus gets stuck in flood water

'Detailed investigations' will be carried out to find out why a bus carrying 26 pupils became stuck in flood water near York this morning.

Stephensons of Easingwold has issued a statement apologising to the pupils involved, after the driver drove past a road closure sign.

Here is the full statement:

"This morning there has been an incident involving a school bus transporting children to Easingwold School where the bus has unfortunately entered a flooded area and become partially submerged as a result.

We are currently conducting detailed investigations into this incident and in doing so are working closely with the relevant authorities including NYCC and the school. As a part of these investigations the driver will be interviewed at the earliest opportunity.

We express our sincere apologies to the children who were on the service this morning as well as to their families for this unfortunate incident. We are very pleased to report that there were no serious injuries as a result of this incident and everyone was successfully rescued from the bus unharmed. We are extremely grateful to the fire brigade and the other emergency services for ensuring that this was the case."
