All water supplies back on after chlorine warning

Severn Trent has explained the reasons some of its customers are not getting water through their taps, following the announcement that it was safe to use again after 3pm.

The water company said nearly 3,700 homes in Leicestershire and Derbyshire had been affected by the issue at a reservoir in Castle Donington.

A long queue for bottled water formed outside Sainsbury's in Swadlincote on Friday evening after residents were told not to use tap water contaminated with dangerous levels of chlorine.

A chlorine-contaminated water supply which forced Severn Trent Water to advise thousands of customers in the East Midlands not to use their water was caused by an "issue" at one of the company's service reservoirs in Castle Donington, the company has revealed.

Around 3,700 customers in Derbyshire and Leicestershire are affected

Residents in the following areas have been told not to use their water supply: DE11, DE15, DE65, DE73 and LE65.

Severn Trent Water said it is "working to flush the water out of the system" and are "constantly testing the quality of water at customers' taps.

The company added that it has been in touch with its most vulnerable customers "to see what their needs are".

Bottled water is being made available to customers at Sainsbury’s in Swadlincote.

Severn Trent Water said anyone concerned about their health should contact their GP.
