There are elections in the Anglia region on Thursday 4 May 2017 for county councillors in Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk along with the newly created post of elected Mayor for Cambs and Peterborough.
Independent candidate Kerry Smith has been re-elected in Basildon Westley Heights in the first result of the night in this year's Local Elections.
Smith won the same seat as a Ukip councillor in 2013, but left the party a year later.
He was the clear winner in this year's count, registering 3,341 votes compared to his nearest challenger Andrew Schrader from the Conservatives who earned 1,329 votes.
Turnout in Westley Heights was 33.62%.
Only two of the six counties in the Anglia region have so far declared results but the Conservatives are making the early running.
The Chairman of Colchester's UKIP branch has defended the party after a poor showing in this year's local elections.
Just under a quarter of residents in Peterborough have cast a vote for the newly-created post of Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
