Vigils have been held in the home town of a Salford aid worker who is being held hostage by Islamic militants. The taxi driver, from Eccles, was kidnapped by Islamic State militants last December, delivering aid in Syria. Prayers were held at Eccles town hall this evening, calling for the 47-year-old's release.
Around 140 people attended the vigil, during which they sang three hymns. The service was organised by the group Hope Greater Manchester. Those attending wrote messages of support in a book, which afterwards was presented to Mr Henning's family. A candlelit vigil was also held for him on a local recreation ground after the service.
It comes after Muslim groups in the north of England last week offered Mr Henning their support. His wife Barbara has called on IS to "open their hearts and minds" to release the former taxi driver.
