Flood defences in Keswick have been breached by surging floodwater caused by Storm Desmond.
Some residents have been evacuated from their homes and roads surrounding the Lake District town are blocked.
The Met Office said "in excess of 150 to 200mm" of rain could fall on Cumbria as Storm Desmond swept in.

Cumbria Police are warning residents not to travel unless "absolutely necessary" as it would "pose a major risk to personal safety".
The flood defences were completed in 2012 at a cost of £6 million.
The Environment Agency-backed project was put in place to protect 180 properties after the town was devastated by floods in 2005 and 2009.
Residents in HighHill road, Elliot road, and Crossthwaite road are being advised to evacuate and attend the local reception centre at St Herbert’s School in Keswick. Cumbria Police warn that all the roads surrounding Keswick are blocked and badly affected by large areas of surface water. In particular the A66 (Keswick side of Bassenthwaite and Embleton).
